Ruminating on Asset Allocation - by Howard Marks
Memos from Howard Marks are unmissable reads on investing. In this latest memo, he addresses one of the most vexing problems facing any fund manager - asset allocation. He starts off with a basic primer on the essential differences between equities and debt. He also notes that a 60/40 split between equity and debt, once the gold standard, now requires a more nuanced approach. Read more…

As risk increases, the range of possible return outcomes also increases along with the expected returns
Essentially, each fund allocation decision comes down to each investor’s risk posture, a concept he introduces in the article. Risk Posture is the investor’s balance between capital preservation and growth. The investing process is a dance between these two extremes. Another interesting point is the interpretation of risk - traditional finance assumes that as risk increases, the return that investors demand also increases but in reality, it isn’t just the expected return that increases but also the range of possible outcomes. At the end of the day, an investor’s skill lies in understanding their own balance between equity/debt and making allocation choices accordingly. Everything else is just a matter of implementation.

Nvidia and India: Towards a symbiotic future
Nvidia, a global leader in AI and computing, has seen its reputation soar as a foundational player in the development of artificial intelligence. Last month, the company’s founder and CEO, Jensen Huang, visited Mumbai, marking a significant moment for India’s tech industry and underscoring India’s potential role in the AI revolution. With India possessing a vast pool of tech talent and a growing AI ecosystem, this visit has sparked excitement across the tech sector and raised questions about the future of AI collaboration between Nvidia and India.
Huang’s visit came with announcements of key partnerships between Nvidia and Indian tech giants, a testament to his confidence in India’s potential. But beyond corporate collaboration, Nvidia’s alliance with India could accelerate India’s tech aspirations on a national level. Here, we explore Nvidia’s plans for India, the partnerships announced, the potential for India to democratize AI, and the challenges ahead.

During his visit, Jensen Huang revealed strategic partnerships with some of India’s largest and most influential companies. As Huang pointed out, with over a third of Nvidia’s workforce based in India, the company clearly has ambitious plans for the region. This announcement comes as Nvidia pursues a vision of enabling AI transformation on a massive scale, where India is expected to play a key role.
TCS, Infosys, and Wipro: AI Integration in Business Operations
Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), a cornerstone of India’s IT industry, announced a five-year expansion of its partnership with Nvidia. Together, they’ve launched a dedicated Nvidia business unit within TCS, targeting sectors such as BFSI, telecom, retail, and automotive. This unit, housed under TCS’s AI cloud business, will drive industry-specific AI applications, facilitating faster adoption of AI within these crucial industries.
Infosys and Wipro, longstanding Nvidia partners, have also been working on enterprise AI solutions to better serve their client bases. Tech Mahindra added to the momentum with a Center of Excellence powered by Nvidia’s platforms, focused on advancing large language models (LLMs) and physical AI applications for industries like telecommunications and manufacturing. Meanwhile, Zoho has leveraged Nvidia’s AI platform to incorporate LLMs into SaaS applications, and Tata Communications, in collaboration with Nvidia, plans to establish one of India’s largest cloud-based supercomputers, with an initial phase launch expected by late 2024.
Reliance Industries: Building India’s Own AI Infrastructure
One of the most transformative collaborations is between Nvidia and Reliance Industries, a partnership aimed at building India’s first sovereign large language model (LLM). As outlined by Reliance, this initiative will harness Nvidia’s advanced GH200 Grasshopper superchip to develop an AI infrastructure capable of scaling services to millions of Indians. This model will be trained on India’s diverse languages and cultural contexts, creating an AI infrastructure tailored to the unique linguistic and social landscape of India.
For Reliance, the partnership holds promise for AI-powered solutions across sectors, from agriculture and healthcare to disaster preparedness. The envisioned AI applications are not only designed for large enterprises but also to serve rural populations by delivering real-time information on weather, crop prices, and medical diagnoses. The AI infrastructure, supported by a vast network of 2000 MW-ready data centers, aims to support applications across Jio’s 450 million users, making AI more accessible at a national scale.

Nvidia’s Vision for India’s AI Transformation
Huang has long been vocal about India’s potential in the global AI landscape, emphasizing that the country could transition from being the “back office” to becoming a global hub of innovation. “India has the potential to become an industry of innovation, to move from services to invention and deep tech,” Huang stated. His vision involves transforming the Indian IT sector from a traditional outsourcing model to a powerhouse of AI-enabled services that can not only serve global needs but also address domestic challenges with localized solutions.
Huang identified three core areas of AI transformation where India has the opportunity to lead:
Sovereign AI: AI developed and managed within a country’s borders, using indigenous data to drive innovation. India’s focus on data sovereignty aligns well with Nvidia’s commitment to developing AI that respects local contexts.
Agentic AI: Automating knowledge-based work, a critical step for industries like customer service, education, and administration where labor-intensive processes can benefit from AI-enabled efficiency.
Physical AI: Applying AI in industrial contexts, from robotics to autonomous systems, a field where India’s manufacturing and infrastructure projects could make significant strides.
India’s Push for Sovereign AI and the AI Commons
Nvidia’s partnership comes as India moves toward building a self-reliant AI ecosystem. Initiatives like the India AI Platform, launched by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, aim to foster a centralized repository of AI resources and promote collaborations across government, academia, and industry. Data localization policies and projects with national agencies such as the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) indicate a strong push for AI that prioritizes national security and data sovereignty.
However, there’s a broader vision for AI beyond just sovereign control. As AI expert Jaspreet Bindra suggests, India can take a unique approach to democratizing AI. “When I say JanAI, I’m referring to AI that’s accessible to the common Indian—no different from the way we served UPI, Aadhaar, and other digital public goods,” he explains. India could build a “JanAI” infrastructure, inspired by the country’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), which would make AI tools available and affordable to all citizens. Nvidia’s role in enabling this digital transformation could prove crucial, particularly in providing compute power, GPUs, and essential infrastructure.

Opportunities and Challenges for Democratizing AI in India
For India to truly democratize AI and ensure it reaches the common citizen, several key components need to be in place:
Infrastructure: Large-scale data centers and AI-ready computing infrastructure are necessary to make AI accessible to over a billion people. Nvidia’s partnerships with Tata Communications and Reliance, and its provision of advanced chips, address the pressing need for robust infrastructure.
Talent and Training: India’s vast pool of tech talent is both a strength and a challenge. While India houses 16% of the world’s AI talent, this workforce requires specialized training to harness AI’s full potential. Nvidia’s commitment to workforce development will be essential in upskilling India’s existing talent.
Data Accessibility: India’s push for data localization aligns with building sovereign AI capabilities. However, ensuring that data, especially local and contextually relevant data, remains accessible for AI development is crucial. This data can power “JanAI” applications, from language processing to region-specific AI applications.
Innovation in Research: Huang has noted the absence of top-tier AI research labs in India, highlighting an area ripe for investment. Without dedicated AI R&D, India may risk repeating its past pattern of serving as an outsourcing hub rather than a leader in proprietary tech development. Establishing AI research labs would empower India to create world-leading AI solutions rather than merely deploying foreign technology.
Toward an AI-Enabled Future: Nvidia and India’s Collaborative Path
Nvidia’s investment in India and its collaborative efforts with Indian enterprises mark an inflection point in India’s AI journey. If India can fully embrace AI’s potential through partnerships, infrastructure investment, and public-accessible technology, it could become a global leader in AI-driven solutions. Huang’s optimism about India’s AI future aligns with Prime Minister Modi’s vision for a self-reliant AI industry, capable of elevating millions and democratizing technology in ways other countries might struggle to replicate.
The country’s goal, as Huang observed, is not merely to become a regional AI hub but a global center for AI innovation. With a population that boasts both consumer demand and vast data resources, India is uniquely positioned to drive a data-to-intelligence flywheel that could reshape industries worldwide. As the AI industry shifts toward intelligence-driven applications, India’s collaboration with Nvidia provides the tools and framework to lead this transformation.
The journey to creating “JanAI” – AI for the people, by the people, and accessible to all – remains complex but achievable. With Nvidia’s compute capabilities, AI chipsets, and infrastructure support, India has the foundational assets to democratize AI, offering everyday Indians access to powerful technologies in their native languages. Together, India and Nvidia can unlock a future where AI’s benefits touch not just corporations but everyday lives, empowering citizens, driving innovation, and positioning India as a true leader in the intelligence industry.
