If you are a fan of Bollywood movies and have felt a dip in the number of watchable movies, you are not alone. And the ones that have managed to make it to the theatres, are often poor quality and fail to draw audiences. India is a country that loves watching movies - there are an estimated 92M theatre-going people who watched atlease one Hindi movie in 2023. Despite such a large addressable audience, movies continue to fail making it difficult for producers to even pay the staff. So what is going on?
During CoVID, OTT studios, hungry to score content, invested huge amounts of money in purchasing movie rights of top stars - actors were being paid 3-4x of theatrical projects for featuring on streaming projects. This led to a significant increase in the cost of producing cinema. OTTs pulled back but the cost inflation stayed. On the consumer side, with the rise of multiplexes, the cost of watching a movie has gone up drastically. As a result, each movie needs to be big and have massive budgets squeezing the low-budget productions making it very hard for producers to experiment with stories or new actors.
